Beginning from the picturesque town of Sonamarg in the Kashmir Valley, trekkers embark on a multi-day adventure that takes them through a series of high-altitude passes, valleys, and glacial lakes. As the trail ascends, trekkers are treated to panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, including the majestic peaks of Harmukh, Machoi Peak, and Kolahoi Peak, which dominate the skyline with their towering presence.
One of the highlights of the Kashmir Great Lakes trek is the opportunity to visit several pristine alpine lakes, each more beautiful than the last. These shimmering bodies of water, nestled amidst the rugged terrain of the mountains, reflect the azure sky and surrounding peaks, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty. Some of the notable lakes along the trek include Vishansar Lake, Krishansar Lake, Gadsar Lake, and Nundkol Lake, each offering a unique charm and tranquility.
The trek also takes trekkers through lush meadows adorned with colorful wildflowers, where shepherds graze their livestock during the summer months. As trekkers traverse the high-altitude passes and rugged terrain, they may encounter nomadic tribes such as the Gujjars and Bakarwals, who migrate with their herds of sheep and goats in search of greener pastures. These encounters offer a glimpse into the traditional way of life in the Himalayas and add to the cultural richness of the trekking experience.
Camping under the starlit sky amidst the serene beauty of the Kashmir Great Lakes is an unforgettable experience, with the crisp mountain air and the distant sound of streams creating a magical ambiance.
